Every living organism on the earth, whether it is in water, in the air or on the land, requires oxygen. The process of taking and using oxygen and the organs involved in the process are collectively called and studied under the term Respiratory system. Respiratory system is one of the subsystems found in every organism even in those fall under the category of Fish i.e. animals living in water. Respiratory system is responsible for providing the Oxygen and filtering the blood for waste gases like Carbon Dioxide. It transports the oxygen into lungs so that it can be diffused into the blood stream so that the Oxygen mixed blood can be pumped out to all parts of the body of any organism. It not only takes air into the body but also exhales waste gases like carbon dioxide out of the body. Inhaling gases in and exhaling out is what is called breathing. To understand and to teach students the breathing process you can also use respiratory system animation video.

Respiratory System is composed of many body parts i.e. organs and tubes. Each part has been assigned a specific task. The following are the Respiratory system parts and their functions in the process of breathing:

Nostrils: Breathing Starts when air is passed through Nostrils. The main function of Nostrils is moisturizing and cleaning of the air. Cleaning is done by tiny hairs known as cilia inside the nostrils by filtering the air for dust and other particles. We can also take air by mouth. Both meet at pharynx

Pharynx: This part is in the form of a tube. It is also called Throat. It is about 12.7 cm long and is stretched from Nostrils and mouth to meet another tube called trachea. It serves as a passage for air. It also plays an important role in digestive system by providing a passage for food and liquids.

Larynx: It is a part of upper trachea and also plays an important role in the voice system of human body. Its main function is to prevent food and liquids from moving into the lower respiratory tract.

Trachea: It is wind tube of the length of 11.4 cm. It is 2.5 cm in diameter. It comes before esophagus. This is the main tube responsible for moving the air into lungs. It also helps in carrying the gases out of the lungs. Elastic fiber in walls of Trachea makes it capable of increasing and decreasing its diameter.

Bronchi: Bronchi word is the plural of bronchus. There are two lungs in human body. Therefore to provide the air for both lungs Trachea is divided into two parts left and right bronchus collectively called Bronchi. The left bronchus sends the air into the left lung and right bronchus sends the air into the right lung.

Lungs: Lungs are the important part of respiratory system. There are two lungs in human body located under the chest. Ribs protect lungs. The Primary function of lungs is to provide the oxygen to the blood and taking Carbon Dioxide back from the blood. This is done by Alveoli, a collection of structures act as a membrane. The best way to study the working of human lungs is to use interactive methods like respiratory system animation videos.

Oxygen is necessary for the proper working of human body. It is supplied to every body organ especially to brain by blood. All the organs of respiratory system especially each of the lungsshould be kept in healthy state. People should not use any form of the tobacco for the healthy working of Respiratory System.
